Mike Janda Ties Legendary Coach John Hanna on School's All-Time Football Victory List
Bellarmine Varsity head coach Mike Janda earned his 170th career victory last Saturday afternoon as the Bells cruised to a 39-7 victory over Riordan. Janda, in his 22nd season as head coach of the Bells, is currently tied with legendary coach John Hanna atop the school's all-time victory list with 170 wins. Hanna capped his 25-year career in 1976 with an overall coaching mark of 170-58-9. Hanna is best remembered for a 3-year string from 1963-1965 in which the Bells ran off 28 consecutive victories highlighted by the 1965 team which allowed a mere 6 points on an interception return for the season.Janda's head coaching ride began in 1984 when he became just the third person in the last 54 years to lead the Bells (John Hanna (1952-1976) and Walt Arnold (1977-1983)). Janda's squads have compiled a 170-77-2 record in his 22 seasons and have appeared in 6 CCS Championship games while capturing the titles in 1986 and 1990.Janda and the Bells look to make history this Friday night as Bellarmine travels to WCAL foe and No. 1 seed Valley Christian in the first round of the CCS Playoffs. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
